Through its Council’s Goals, the Town of Whitby is committed to remaining a community of choice for businesses and job creators. That’s why the Town is creating a new, five-year Economic Development Strategy to ensure that it can continue to attract new investment to the Town while retaining and supporting more than 11,100 (Emsi Inc., Analyst, 2021) businesses that currently call Whitby home. That’s why it’s important we hear from our local businesses, entrepreneurs, innovators and residents on what the Town can do to build a strong and sustainable economy.

The strategy will replace the current strategy which expired in 2020. The development of a new Economic Development Strategy is one of the Town’s 12 Business Plan priorities.

Project Background

The creation of the new Economic Development Strategy is being led by a steering committee consisting of business and community members, as well as Town staff. The development of the plan will take place in stages, which will include a background study on what other municipalities have implemented, an overview of the economic and demographic situation within the municipality, community engagement and more. A proposed strategy is intended to be presented to Council for approval later this year.
