June 20, 2023 – UPDATE

Last year, the Town conducted community engagement on the future of the basketball net at Forest Heights Park. More than 340 residents completed the online survey, showing general support for the reinstallation of the basketball net at its previous location in the park. On June 19, 2023, after further consideration of this community feedback, Town Council directed staff to reinstall the net in the park.

Background

Last fall, the Town of Whitby temporarily removed the basketball net at Forest Heights Park due to concerns raised about noise created during its use.

Now, as the weather gets warmer, we want to know your thoughts on the future of basketball in the park.

Community Engagement

In May 2022, residents were asked to complete a short survey to share whether they thought the basketball net should be:

  • re-installed at its previous location in the park,
  • moved to another location within the park and installed on a new asphalt court surface, or
  • permanently removed from Forest Heights Park.

Next Steps

A staff report summarizing the results of this community engagement and seeking Council direction on the future of the basketball net will be received at the Committee of the Whole meeting at 7 p.m. on June 13, 2022. Residents can tune into the meeting live at whitby.ca/livestream. Anyone interested can also register to make a delegation before Council up until 10 a.m. the morning of the meeting.
