Help Choose the Town of Whitby’s Official Tree

Residents are invited to join in a Community Planting Celebration on April 20

Thanks to all of you who took the time to vote on one of four trees to become Whitby's official tree.

Further to community engagement last fall, we have a winner! Will it be the Honey Locust, Tamarack, Tulip Tree, or Kentucky Coffee Tree? Join us to find out, as we unveil and take part in a special celebratory planting of Whitby's first official tree.

Here are the event details and how to take part:

What: Official tree announcement and LEAF community tree planting

Where: Whitby Civic Park (behind Whitby Town Hall located at 575 Rossland Rd. E.)

When: Saturday, April 20 with activities planned as follows:

  • 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. - announcement and planting of Whitby's first official tree
  • 12 to 12:30 p.m. - tree tour of Whitby Civic Park hosted by LEAF (view and learn about different trees located in the park)
  • 1 to 3 p.m. - LEAF community tree planting activity - roll up your sleeves and help plant some trees (registration is required)

How:

Register for the LEAF community planting activity by April 18

Please wear the following if attending the LEAF community tree planting:

  • Closed-toed shoes or boots - no sandals, please
  • Gardening gloves if you have them ( we will have extras)
  • Appropriate clothing - the event runs rain or shine

This event underscores the Town's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Background

The Town recognizes the essential role that trees and the urban forest play in providing a healthy and sustainable quality of life for all residents. The protection, preservation, growth, and enhancement of the urban forest is a priority for the Town.
