Whitby’s urban forest includes all of the trees on both public and private land across Town. A study for this project estimates there are between 1.3 and 1.9 million trees in Whitby, covering about 25% of the Town. Our urban forest provides oxygen, shade, cooling, stormwater management, carbon storage, and many other essential services and benefits. These services are valued at over $6.3 million per year!
As our community grows, our trees face challenges from urban development, climate change, invasive species, and more. Whitby’s Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) will help us maintain, protect, and enhance our tree cover over the next 20 years.
A Draft UFMP is being drafted with careful consideration for the information gathered though the tree inventory, urban forest canopy cover analysis, policy and technical review, and Phase 1 engagement. This 20-year plan outlines a long-term vision for our urban forest and identifies goals, targets, and strategic actions to support the maintenance, protection and enhancement of Whitby's urban forest.
Have Your Say
The Draft Town of Whitby Urban Forest Management Plan will be available on May 14, 2025. Please come back to review the Plan and tell us what you think by completing the online survey, which will “go live” the same day.
A community engagement session will be held on Wednesday, May 28 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. which you can attend in-person at Town Hall (575 Rossland Road East) or virtually (check back for the Zoom link to be posted closer to the event).
Please join Town Forestry staff and the project consulting team to learn more about the UFMP and share your thoughts about the Plan.
Next Steps
Community feedback will inform the Town’s final Urban Forest Management Plan. The UFMP will be brought forward for Council approval in Fall 2025.
