Whitby Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program

<div style="background:#efefef; padding:14px 14px 6px 14px; margin: 0 0 16px 0;"><p>As one of the fastest growing communities in Ontario, North Whitby needs more electricity to support future growth and connectivity.</p><p>The Town has declared a parcel of land at 150 Winchester Road West - between Amanda Avenue and Winchester Road - in South Brooklin as surplus and is considering its conveyance to Elexicon Energy Inc. to build an electrical substation. This process is known as a land disposition.</p><p>The proposed substation would support the construction of up to 5,000 new homes in the community.</p></div><h2>Share Your Feedback</h2><p>Community engagement is an important part of the Town&#39;s decision-making process. Construction is anticipated to begin in September 2022 and be completed in November 2022.</p></div><h2>How can I get involved?</h2><p>Between Monday, April 11 and Friday, May 2 complete a survey to share feedback on the playground design and to provide general comments on the proposed project.</p><h3>Next Steps</h3><p>Feedback collected will help to inform the playground design.</p><h4>Park features and amenities included in the proposed design include:</h4><ul><li>Playground with engineered wood fibre surfacing</li><li>Sand play area</li><li>Basketball court resurfacing</li><li>Walking path with bench rest area</li></ul><h2>Planning Background</h2><p>The Town has four different Park classifications including Town, District, Local and Parkette; all of which serve a different function and contain different park elements and amenities.</p><p>A Town Park has major facilities and contains community centres, arenas, swimming pools and lighted athletic fields and is intended to serve the recreational needs of the whole community.</p><p>A District Park is designed to serve the recreational needs of a larger neighbourhood or series of neighbourhoods. They are for primarily active recreational uses including lighted athletic fields, playgrounds, courts and parking areas. Various sports user groups rely on District Parks to undertake the various sports programming for youth minor sports across the community.</p><p>Local Parks such as Philips-Kozaroff Park and smaller Parkettes are intended to serve the recreational needs of the immediate neighbourhood for active and passive recreational uses. Local Parks contain sports fields, playgrounds, courts, walkways and in some cases splash pads. Smaller Parkettes normally contain playgrounds, seating areas and walkways.</p><p>The Town&#39;s <a href="https://www.whitby.ca/en/work/official-plan.aspx">Official Plan</a> and several Council approved guiding documents help direct the development of our parks. Phillips- Kozaroff Park Playground and Basketball Court Renovation

A few finishing touches are scheduled for late summer and early fall 2023.</span></p><p><br></p><p>In the fall of 2021, the Town of Whitby started the detailed design for the paving of a pedestrian trail connection between Florence Drive and Garden Street.
