Help Shape the Future of Luther Vipond Memorial Arena
The Luther Vipond Memorial Arena (LVMA) located on Winchester Road East has served as a community gathering space for recreation and the iconic Brooklin Spring Fair since 1973.
While the facility grounds will continue to host the Brooklin Spring Fair, with the opening of a new twin-pad arena at the future Fieldgate Sports Complex planned for 2026, ice sports like hockey will soon be moved out of the facility, making way for new community uses.
Join the Town of Whitby, Vipond Family, and Whitby Council for the last community skate at the facility before ice sports move to other arenas.

Community Engagement
Community engagement has been an essential part of reimagining the future use of the facility. In 2025, significant engagement was undertaken with both the public and current and potential facility user groups. The focus was to gather input on which indoor recreational activities they would like to see prioritized for play in the space and whether there was an interest in hosting community events and programming at the facility.
More than 1,300 people participated in an online survey with several hundred more taking part in in-person and virtual engagement sessions.
On Monday, June 23, 2025 at a Regular Council Meeting, Council passed a Motion that regardless of the future community use identified for the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena and site, that the recognition of Luther Vipond and his name remain a key feature. Read the full motion here.
The results of the community engagement and recommendations on the facility's future use will be presented to Whitby Town Council later this year. Subscribe to this page to stay informed on key project updates.
Project Background
After significant engagement, in 2024 the Parks and Recreation Master Planrecommended that the Town “undertake a facility renewal strategy to investigate the feasibility of updating and modernizing LVMA for indoor programming and rentals, including supporting the Brooklin Spring Fair. This should involve input from community partners and the public.”
The Whitby Community Strategic Plan provides guidance under Strategic Pillars 1 and 4 to invest in recreational infrastructure and provide accessible and inclusive municipal services and programming. This project aligns with and supports these pillars and their key action items.
