In 2021, the Town of Whitby engaged the community on whether it should go paperless with its annual Waste Collection Calendar, historically printed and mailed to all Whitby households each spring. Information from the calendar would continue to be made available online and through the Waste Buddy app.
Based on the feedback received from more than 1,300 survey participants (see below for highlights), the Town has discontinued the mailing of the printed calendar to households.
Residents can go online to access their waste collection schedule and information. Those who would like a printed waste collection schedule can also visit any Town facility to pick up a copy starting in May.
Why It Matters
The Town is committed to reducing waste wherever possible and operating in an environmentally friendly way. Other municipalities have realized a number of benefits of putting their waste calendar exclusively online. These include: saving trees, reducing costs, decreasing carbon impacts and real-time communication.
We are also committed to providing residents with information on Town services the way in which they want to receive it. Through our 2020 Community Survey, the majority of participants indicated they prefer to receive Town updates through digital channels, like the website and social media.
What We Heard
More than 1,300 people participated in the Town's survey, sharing their feedback to help inform the decision as to whether the Town should go paperless with its annual Waste Collection Calendar. Here's the highlights of what we heard:
68% of participants currently get their waste collection schedule information through the Whitby Waste Buddy App
more than half of participants indicated they refer to the printed calendar only once per year or never
78% of participants indicated they would support the discontinuation of the printed version of the Whitby Waste Calendar
