Whitby Civic Recreation Complex (CRC) Renovation Completion Delayed to Summer 2023

Thank you for your interest in receiving updates about the Whitby Civic Recreation Centre Complex (CRC) renovations.

While crews continue to renovate the pool, construct new inclusive change rooms, and build a new multi-purpose recreation programming space, there are unfortunately a number of factors impacting the project. This includes a spring labour strike and staffing shortages, ongoing worldwide supply chain issues and material shortages, and unknown site conditions. As a result, the opening of these amenities have been delayed to summer 2023. We know that this is a disappointment, and want to assure all residents that the Town continues to take steps to ensure this project is completed as quickly as possible, like pre-ordering all material. We want to thank residents for their patience and understanding as these renovations are completed to serve you, and our growing community better. A reminder that the Anne Ottenbrite Pool at Iroquois Park Sports Centre remains open for all residents to enjoy.

In addition, the multi-purpose room at the Whitby Civic Recreation Complex will also temporarily close from December to March due to the renovation. The majority of adult fitness classes will be run at alternate locations. Courses and locations will be listed online, available November 21 at whitby.ca/Active.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding. We remain committed to keeping you updated on this project.

If you have questions, please reach out to Wojtek Kowalewski, Capital Projects Supervisor, Facilities at kowalewskiw@whitby.ca

Upgrades to be completed during the renovation include:

  • a new universal/family change room with 22 change stalls (up from 3), 100 lockers (up from 28), 12 baby change tables (up from 1), 19 showers (up from 3) and 4 washrooms (up from 2);
  • wider hallways will make it easier for families with strollers or residents in wheelchairs to move throughout the universal/family change room;
  • an upper-level universal washroom to better serve residents with disabilities;
  • renovations to the existing women’s public changeroom, men’s public changerooms and aquatics staff changerooms;
  • new multi-purpose programming space for all age groups to enjoy: and,
  • safety equipment upgrades including a new fire alarm, expanded pool audio system, pool lighting and improved ventilation systems.

Get Involved

Before the work begins, you’re invited to review and comment on a design concept for the change rooms to help to inform the final design. Have your say now through Monday, November 1 at 4:30 p.m.

Why It Matters

The Town is committed to providing an inclusive environment where all residents, visitors and employees have equal access to programs, services, facilities and amenities. In particular, change rooms are being renovated to better accommodate families with children, residents who are 55 +, and persons with disabilities.

What’s Next

Feedback collected will help to inform the final recommended change rooms design, expected to be brought forward for Council approval later this year. During the renovation, which is expected to start in 2022, the Men’s and Women’s change rooms will be closed to the public.

The Health Club Members' change rooms and fitness programs remain open during this time.

Project Funding

This project has been made possible by a more than $1.9 million grant from the Government of Canada’s Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS) of the Investing in Canada plan; over $1.6 million grant from the Province of Ontario; and a $1.3 investment from the Town of Whitby.
