New Whitby Sports Complex Design
The Town is working to construct a new Whitby Sports Complex to help meet both the immediate and future recreational needs of our growing community. The new complex will be located on the west side of Baldwin Street South, south of the intersection of Highway 407.
The vision for the complex: to create a multi-purpose gathering space for inclusive sport and community programming - a place for residents of all ages and abilities to connect, play and get active.

The proposed playground at the new Whitby Sports Complex is designed to complement the surrounding recreational amenities, which include lit pickleball, tennis and basketball courts; a lit multi-purpose artificial turf field, a skatepark and pump track; and more. Refer to the park renderings and the outdoor park space design drawing to view the site design.
The proposed playground features a variety of play structures designed for children of all ages and abilities, including engineered wood fibre playground surfacing, accessible junior and senior play structures, inclusive swings, seating/picnic areas, shade structures, shade trees, and more. It offers engaging play experiences that promote cognitive, emotional, physical, sensory, and social play development.
This design reflects significant community input gathered through past engagement opportunities, including feedback on the complex and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

Project Background
We know from the results of our Parks and Recreation Master Plan and 2024 Community Surveys that part of what makes Whitby a great place to live are its world-class sports facilities. To continue to deliver on resident expectations, the Town must continue to invest in maintaining and creating sports facilities, like this new complex.
The need for a new sports facility was identified in the Town's Culture, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Strategic Master Plan as well as the Sports Facility Strategy that was developed based on significant community engagement. Both plans identified amenities that the new sports complex should include meeting the recreational needs of its community. In addition, amenities were selected based on feedback received during a needs assessment with Whitby's sports organizations in 2020.

Environmental Sustainability
The Whitby Sports Complex will target both Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Certifications. To achieve net-zero operational carbon, the design will eliminate fossil fuel use for heating, use renewable energy and reduce the use of high global warming potential refrigerants. The building and site will support many of the social and environmental goals identified by the Town in its Strategic Plan and Zero Carbon Whitby Plan.
