The Town is working to construct a new Whitby Sports Complex to help meet both the immediate and future recreational needs of our growing community. The new complex will be located on the west side of Baldwin Street South, south of the intersection of Highway 407.

The vision for the complex: to create a multi-purpose gathering space for inclusive sport and community programming - a place for residents of all ages and abilities to connect, play and get active.

Update – August 22, 2024 – Help Select Indigenous Public Art Piece

Public art inspires creativity and fosters a sense of local pride. A public art piece at the future Whitby Sports Complex will help to animate the space for the enjoyment of all residents and visitors.

The Town has partnered with STEPS Public Art to commission an Indigenous art installation at the future Whitby Sports Complex. This initiative builds on our commitment to raising awareness of Indigenous cultures, peoples, and heritages.

After a call for artists late last year by STEPS Public Art, three art proposals have been selected and shortlisted for community feedback.

Have Your Say

Don’t miss this opportunity to shape community-centred artwork. Now through Thursday, September 5, visit stepspublicart.org/whitbypublicart to complete a short survey on each of the following shortlisted artist proposals:

A photo, short description, and video are available for each.

Next Steps

Feedback collected will help inform the art Selection Panel’s final decision on which art installation will make its home at the future Whitby Sports Complex.

Project Background

We know from the results of our 2020 Community Survey that part of what makes Whitby a great place to live are its world-class sports facilities. To continue to deliver on resident expectations, the Town must continue to invest in maintaining and creating sports facilities, like this new complex.

The need for a new sports facility was identified in the Town's Culture, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Strategic Master Plan as well as the Sports Facility Strategy that was developed based on significant community engagement. Both plans identified amenities that the new sports complex should include meeting the recreational needs of its community. In addition, amenities were selected based on feedback received during a needs assessment with Whitby's sports organizations in 2020.

*Renderings are conceptual and not an exact representation of the materials or spaces depicted. The design and materiality will change and evolve as the project progresses.

Environmental Sustainability

The Whitby Sports Complex will target both Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Certifications. To achieve net-zero operational carbon, the design will eliminate fossil fuel use for heating, use renewable energy and reduce the use of high global warming potential refrigerants. The building and site will support many of the social and environmental goals identified by the Town in its Strategic Plan and Zero Carbon Whitby Plan.
