Brock Street Redesign Study in Downtown Whitby

The Town of Whitby has initiated a multi-year project to refresh and revitalize historic Brock Street, from the exit at Highway 401 all the way north to the CP rail track near Maple Street.

Update on The Future Design of Brock Street in Downtown Whitby

Hey, Connect Whitby community! As a follower of the Brock Street Redesign project, we wanted to let you know that the results of the second survey and engagement sessions are in.

Thank you to the more than 820 people who participated in our online survey and the 125-plus people who attended the open house drop-in sessions.

Here are the highlights of what we heard in Phase Two:

  • Traffic calming was identified as a top priority. Of those surveyed, 52% support the proposed roundabout at Brock Street and Burns Street, 10% are neutral, and 38% are opposed.
  • There was mixed feedback about reducing the road from four lanes to three (one lane in each direction with a centre left-turn lane). Of those surveyed, 35% support the change, 19% are neutral, and 46% do not support it.
  • Keeping pedestrians safe is important. Adding crosswalks and a multi-use path on parts of the west side of Brock Street was seen as a positive change.
  • Many people want historic features preserved and restored, with design elements reflecting the area’s history.
  • Parking matters, especially on-street parking. In the online survey, 83% of people supported adding accessible on-street parking along Brock Street.

Next Steps

The feedback gathered is anticipated to be shared with Whitby Town Council at a later date to help guide the final design and construction timing.

Thank you for your participation and interest in this project.
