Kindness makes for a happier world!!

by TammyN, almost 3 years ago

Since Covid began, I have been blessed to witness an outpouring of love and kindness from a group called Whitby Caremongers. One volunteer in particular stands out to me. Cindy Cole, a single mom of two fabulous boys, works full time and immediately stepped in to help as many as she could as part of Caremongers and outside of Caremongers. She shops for seniors, she checks in on people and offers to shop for friends and family members while she’s out and about picking up and delivering for others. She’s spreading love and cheer through messages and flowers. My 93... Continue reading

Whitby Volunteers Assist Seniors with Tax Filing

I would like to recognize Whitby Seniors Tax Support Volunteers :Deo Mathura, Joan Ward, Sheila Robson, Eleanor Stevenson, Stan Walker and Sam Allen. Throughout the pandemic they have worked tirelessly to support low income seniors with tax return preparation and filing. Even though the Seniors Centre was closed, they continued volunteering in 2020 and throughout March and April of 2021 filing over 600 returns for seniors who needed assistance with tax preparation and filing. Their support of Whitby seniors by continuing to provide this important service is so appreciated.

Social Distance Management! SmALL Businesses are Essential!

by robina brah, about 3 years ago

Social Distance Management is a company that was created early last year as a result of the pandemic and is dedicated to assisting small businesses during this unprecedented time. Owner Edward Henry, recognized that having businesses unlock is about much more than just business continuity and economic recovery, but also about consistency and customer safety. By taking responsibility for their own space, small businesses can utilize the consistency of social distance compliance as Social Distance Management manages this aspect. Businesses owners shouldn’t have to navigate the ambiguity and uncertainty of changing policies, they need consistency and social distance compliance. Social... Continue reading

    Fuzz Whitby Really Shines

by Alex Thom, about 3 years ago
Dawn Flowers of Fuzz Whitby (and Ajax) is such an incredibly giving person. During the pandemic, when PPE was incredibly difficult to find, she was first in line offering supplies used in her shops. She has been such a huge supporter of her fellow small business owners, at a time when we are ALL suffering, she continues to give. It's business owners like Dawn who make Whitby such a wonderful place to live. Thank you for all you do, Dawn!

    Whitby Caremongers are Community Heroes

by Alex Thom, about 3 years ago

It has been such a heartwarming experience to witness all the good that the Caremongers group, lead by the incredible Niki Lundquist, Tracy Foucault, and Shauna, Eva, Cindy, and Peggy (I am sorry I don't know their last names!) have done since the beginning of the pandemic.

Never have I seen a group bring a community together this way. From food drives, to winter gear collection, running errands for those who are too at risk to do them, to their gift card collection for teens, it's all been the light keeping Whitby shining.

This is a group of truly inspiring... Continue reading

Just Brakes Plus - Act of Kindness

A resident that has difficulty with some tasks due to a brain injury shared this story of an act of kindness. At the beginning of the COVID lockdown, she needed air in an old bike tire and headed to Just Brakes Plus on Brock Street to see if she could use their pump to inflate the flat tire. The owner showed her how to use the pump and offered to do it for her. Unfortunately, as he proceeded, the old tire burst. He was so apologetic and insisted on replacing the tire; he ended up replacing both tires, cleaning and... Continue reading

Fran Stein has a great team of Whitby businesses that are helping her make this possible. Fran Stein and her team have the biggest hearts and want to help those... Continue reading

    Double Duty Superhero

by Shauna Reay, over 3 years ago

Janet Anderson has been doing double community duty for all of 2020. She is an active volunteer on the events committee at Girls Inc. of Durham, using her extensive marketing background to navigate the switch from in-person to virtual event, making the 2020 Power of the Purse the most successful one to date. All funds raised support the mental health of girls in our community during and following the Covid-19 crisis.

At the same time, she has also been volunteering with the Whitby Caremongers, doing volunteer shopping and deliveries for seniors, helping at food drives, and collecting/delivering for the recent... Continue reading

A bright light during dark days!

by ErinBailey, over 3 years ago
Cindy Aston Cole is a member of the Caremongers in Whitby. To say she is a shinning light is an understatement, Cindy shops regularly for seniors in the community, without hesitating, she is always the first to volunteer. Cindy is always concerned about the well being of others. She’s been known to anonymously drop a bouquet of flowers of on friends porches just to put a smile on their faces. If she’s not dropping off flowers or groceries, then she’s leading either a food or toy drive. All this while raising two young men as a single mother. Cindy deserves... Continue reading

    Free exercises for seniors

by Kwhit, over 3 years ago
My daughter is a seniors fitness instructor. She was a paid instructor at local senior centers but since the covid restrictions began the centers are closed. She used to teach 15 to 18 classes per week. Beginning in March she has donated her time to teach free seniors fitness classes on line. So proud of her selfless dedication to keep our seniors fit and healthy.
